elixir...

"The 'elixir of life' that could soon be given by injection
By FIONA MACRAE - 16th August 2007

mitochondria

A new injection could prove to be the 'elixir of life.' The injection works on the body's mitochondria, the 'energy centres' of our cells. The prospect of holding back the years with a simple injection could be closer than we think. Scientists have taken a step towards developing a treatment that could erase the health problems associated with ageing.

While their breakthrough relates to rogue genes behind two rare genetic diseases, the approach they used could one day be harnessed to slow down the ageing process - creating an "elixir of life". The research focuses on mitochondria, sausage-shaped "powerhouses" in every cell of the body except red blood cells. They turn the food we eat into energy that can be used by the heart, muscles, brain and other parts of the body. Research has suggested their deterioration is an important cause of ageing, according to a report in New Scientist magazine.

About one in 5,000 children and adults are at risk of developing a mitochondrial disease, which include disorders of the nervous system and blindness. One unique feature of mitochondria is that they have their own DNA, known as mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited from the mother only. Defects in this mitochondrial DNA are blamed for a range of rare genetic diseases, including some forms of diabetes, blindness and heart problems. They have also been linked to ageing - suggesting that fixing the flaws could slow down the onset of old age. However, all attempts to fix flaws by inserting healthy DNA into mitochondria - a technique known as gene therapy - have failed, with the fresh genes stubbornly staying outside the powerhouses.

Now, by labelling the functional genes with an "address code" - which effectively tells them where to go - French scientists have succeeded in smuggling them inside the mitochondria. Once there, the pair of genes repaired the damage behind a rare form of blindness and a muscle wasting disease, says the New Scientist report. In time, the same approach could be used to create injections of genes that will erase flaws thought to be linked to the ageing process. However, while this might slow down ageing, it would not halt it completely, as mitochondria are just one of many factors involved in the ageing process.

Professor Patrick Chinnery, a leading British expert on mitochondrial disorders, said: 'It is not a panacea but, if successful, it might potentially correct part of this ageassociated damage to mitochondria which might be important in slowing down ageing. "What they are doing sounds potentially a very clever idea. There is no treatment for these diseases, so any advance is clearly of great interest."

The researchers, from Marie Curie University in Paris, now plan to move their experiments from cells to rats, with human treatments the ultimate aim. There are, however, many hurdles to be crossed. For instance, researchers need to be confident that genes act as billed and do not disrupt other vital processes. They also need to work out how to get them to the right parts of the body without causing harmful side effects to other tissues. Gene therapy offers hope of new treatments for a raft of illnesses, from cancer to Parkinson's disease.

In a recent trial reported in the Lancet, injections of genes into the brain significantly helped relieve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Tremors and rigidity were reduced by up to 65 per cent, with no ill effects."

Question: DO we want to live forever? (Don't be arrogant and just say yes for the sake of knowledge and understanding, but rather think of the impact of humans on our surroundings too)

you 2

Hi! Hooola! Heylo! Namaste! :)

I know a lot of my recent posts have been inspirational quotations, and wonderful music lyrics and videos...not much "content" has been sprawled out for the world to know about me. It's only because I'm in a state where I'm taking everything in. You know..all that philosophical "breathing in" is occurring.

I've grown up a lot. I'm not saying I've "grown up" but I'm definitely more aware of my responsibilities in my own life. I'm surprisingly not as big a spendthrift as I thought I'd be in relation to finances (except for paying oh about a BILLION dollars in secondary application fees *flails inside parenthesis*). I still haven't lost myself in the conundrum that is our "real world." I'm sure I get all confused and frustrated at all the choices and decisions that face me, but I make them eh? And that's saying something. I'm making my own choices! And I'm taking full responsibility for them! It sure as heck is not easy, and I've tripped over myself so many times it's uncountable. (I blame this on the ice *looks of innocence*)

Apart from the above philosophical jazz, the new year could NOT have started off any better! I had SUCH a blast! I got to walk across frozen lakes, and sleep over cuddled with certain best friends. On top of that, the bestest of them all blew my socks off...I couldn't believe she was in front of me so soon that I almost kept pinching myself to make sure she was real (this is AFTER I peed my pants). And OFCOURSE in all the excitement I was bound to forget something (you know what it is *winks*). And noow..I'm sick..sad, but also JOYOUS! Do you KNOW how wondrous it is to be sick? My mom and dad absolutely freak out about me, and the past weekend was, although quite miserable in terms of physical fitness, the most relaxing one I've had in a long long time! :)

Ironically (and maybe a bit impossibly), all of this "breathing in" also takes my breath away.

So I say unto you:

"It's a beautiful day,
the sky falls And you feel like
it's a beautiful day,
Don’t let it get away" ~U2

Just....don't let it get away. :)

el mirador...

I saw I am Legend recently, and OH ME GOSH..it's awesome! I ALSO happened to be at Meijer and heard some really really stupid girl claim it "sucked." *scoffs* SHE didn't know what she was talking about...WHATSOEVER.

(psst..look away if you haven't seen it yet)

That movie brought to light so many realities, the most obvious of which is whether or not a human could possibly SANELY survive ALL ALONE (with or without a pet) on this planet. This guy survives for 3 incredible years! That's insanely amazing! The philosophical part of me wonders if I'd be able to beat the odds...it feels like I'd finally be at peace with no other humans around. I'd have the whole world to myself. Nothing but my survival and more importantly, my enlightenment to satiate my worth. No money. No objects to "demonstrate" my "value." Just my thoughts, and the world. Alone.

That would be beautiful.

I think in doing that I really COULD survive much longer. If everything on earth was just left as it is, and there were no humans OR zombies here (except all other creatures), then I'd be pleasantly surprised. I'd take a long walk as far as I could go. Maybe I'd worry about my safety still, just from the shock of not having non-trustworthy humans around. (I know, double negative..DEAL) But mostly, I'd take my time to get away from any road, or building, or anything remotely human possible. I wonder if I'd give up clothing? ..Would I be THAT daring? Would you? Is it "daring" when nobody is around to judge you? Maybe I'd still be conscious of it because I've been taught to live with it, the whole "shame" thing. An animalistic part of me would disagree though. Who cares about shame anymore? It'd just be me, an animal just like another, surviving with the best of my instincts.

I'd be free. I'd see the ocean (not from an airplane)..I'd stare through super-powerful telescopes at night, and I'd definitely like to see a whale. I'd read forever and EVER. I'd just try to take it all in..try to actually understand the 'cosmic sound of truth'. As Franz Kafka once said: "It is not necessary that you leave the house. Remain at your table and listen. Do not even listen, only wait. Do not even wait, be wholly still and alone. The world will present itself to you for its unmasking . . . in ecstasy it will writhe at your feet." ......all for nobody but me! :)

Alas, I wonder if the expression of "sociability" would honestly, eventually catch up. What if I'm not able to even survive a single year all alone simply because I'd go insane? If I did survive longer than this, I would most probably forget all lingual mannerisms. I'd invent my own language, and talk to myself (this is a definite). And I wonder if my dreams would be inhabited by humans? Would I be haunted by the thoughts of being all "alone?" Why does that word sound so scary sometimes?

Another important notion the movie brings up, which seems to have already begun, is the concept of humans being responsible for self-annihilation. Humans are exactly that...only human. We are BOUND to make mistakes. Scientists, even the most educated ones, are only human. I'm quite a firm believer of the idea that cancer and diabetes cannot fully be "cured" or "eradicated" as was Smallpox. There's too many complexities and consequences, too many unique events that characterize each disease in each individual. I HAD a hope once that this could happen, but since I entered the world of research I have come to the honest realization that this is unreal. Even if we do find something that is capable of eradicating a major disease, there's ALWAYS something else around the corner. We are parasites, mere competitors against EVERYTHING that's out there...odds are something's always going to stick around. In reference to the movie I Am Legend, death and the zombification of humans "stuck around." I'm a little glad that although the movie stretched the idea of "consequences for one's actions" theme with the cure to cancer, it was brought into the public limelight. They projected science as what it truly is...a search, and a hope...not ever fully a definite because everything changes. Things evolve.

Wow..I had all those pent up thoughts! :P I COULD go on for hours..but that'd bore the rest of my fellow homo sapiens to extinction (wait, this could be good for me *evil cackle*).

I'm just thankful for humans though, because I know my enlightenment could not have reached the almost amateur level at which it is without the knowledge and hard work of others. And I'm thankful to experience love...that'd be difficult to understand if I were all alone. The thought of having nobody to "die for" but myself, seems selfish.

ok ok..I'll stop now! :D

here i stand...

I sometimes stand here, on this small Earth,
And I am all alone.
It is pristine -
The silence.

I sometimes am here, in the middle of the Universe,
And I am not alone anymore.
It is mesmerizing -
The lights.

I sometimes am here, nowhere,
And I am complete.
It is dark.
The wholeness of nothing.

student? O_o

*ahem*

I walked forth into Sawall for some oh so wonderful, MARVELOUS organic foodstuffs. (naan) ...The service there is usually, actually ALWAYS wonderful! I get a bright smiley face, that immediately recognizes me for the unmistakable "student" that I am and thereby get a 10% discount on all my organilicious goods. *savors new wordage*

ALAS! Twere the eve of today and in joyous beeps of cashier glory an ugly stare bore into mine and demanded a student ID!!!! OMG. SERIOUSLY? Let me emphasize the seriousness of the seriosity:

1. It's 50 below zero degrees outside
2. I'm on my way home from an EXHAUSTING day of work
3. I look like a nerd
4. Correction...I look like a 2 year old!
5. And sound like one too!
6. Namely, I am THE ETERNAL STUDENT!!!!!
7. CAN THIS MOFO NOT TELL???!!!
8. Did 4 years with 3 degrees not earn me THAT much?
9. Where have all eternal student rights gone?!
10. Even despite me giving her the "you're S***ing me right?" look...she said, quite rudely, "i need your id."
11. I RAN 5 minutes in the cold to my car, buried in the midst of 74,973,892,359 billion other cars in the cold, and almost slipped on the way there and back!
12. When I got back, she asked for my credit card, WHICH SHE ALREADY TOOK FROM ME BEFORE!!!!!
13. whodda hell
14. Where am I going with this numbering thing?

I suppose the above is a well organized (?) outline of my argument. I was poopered, and flustering with anger, completely bamboozled that the one location that had in my imagination remained pure of all such commercial-rule evilty was forever gone. Before, back when I was "young" and apparently still a "student" *cringes* Sawall didn't even have a place for their shopping carts. Heck! They didn't even HAVE shopping carts! They had BASKETS! You had to work hard for organic food! This time, they had 50,429,374,289 trillion shopping carts aligned in these commercially consumer-popular cart holders, and there were 90% more Sawall people (Sawallese?) lurking around pretending to wholesomely enrich the shelves.

All of it..the purity of untainted commercialism..is now forever gone!

*poof* :( *flails*

I hate when life gets real. But thus it is. And it is thus.

SUHNOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!!

:) I'm happy. I see white fluffs of magic landing on my tongue, on my jacket, in my eyes. If only I could stare at them forever! I know most people dread snow, because of having to drive in it. But to me, in the winter, I wake up wishing it were snowing outside. It brings a smile to my face. It makes me so happy inside, like the little kid in me jumps excitedly and claps her hands! :D *jumps excitedly* Maybe it's knowing that I'm in a snow globe..warm and comfortable, while the snow wisps past the pungent cold of symmetrical snowflakes on my face. I love that feeling. I've waited for these moments for a long time. I wonder if anybody else could understand my joy.

I'm SO happy. It's snowing. Which warrants my yearly dedication to snow by Robert Frost:

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

heylls beylls!

Ok, so it's November. NOVEMBER!!! Apparently last year we had quite the "buttload" of snow dumped on us. I know I'm not a BIG fan of the winter and all..but dang it..if it's going to be cold, it'd better snow with it! I need beauty to look at! And that involves white fluffy snips of magic falling from the sky instead of dark ominous looming clouds that hide the sunlight.

Umm. I take that back. We've seen quite a few days of sunlight too. :D Every day I see the sun rising on my way to work, and it looks BEAUTIFUL! SO I suppose the snow COULD stay away for a while. (it's 80 outside right now! :O )

Although this whole usurpation of the weather has got me a bit worried and irritated.

*twitches*

a case of the giggles..

I went to D&W today, just to buy some 2% lowfat milk. Skipped about like I always do to the cash register, and then, stopped, stared, and BURST OUT LAUGHING!

I'M A COMPLETE MORON! The dude at the cash register was SO attractive I could barely keep my face straight! *HAHAHAHHA* So when he asked how I was, I just laughed, and snorted out a "good" somewhere in the spit-infested conundrum. And then, I pretended to stare at the credit card machine the whole time...still giggling like an idiot. Even the zit on his cheek seemed to add "appeal." I guess I was taken aback...I haven't seen many "attractive" males lately, and dang it, it took me by surprise! I was so happy it was...it was...uncontainable!

*god* I'm hopeless...HOPELESS I TELL YE!!!!!!! :D *swoons* For those of you who really know me, I wear my emotions on my sleeve. If I hate you, I hate you...and I show it. If I love you...well, I drown you with presents, and with encouragement in the worst of times, and make fun of you like the foo' thatchu are. ;) If I'm tired, I get bothered and irritable, and when I'm bored...I fidget like a maniac. If I'm sleepy, I think of space. If I'm happy, I'm loud and boisterous, and I laugh like the loudest 5 foot 2 inch clown that you ever sawed! And if I'm sad, I sulk inside, and I drown myself in busy-ness to stop confronting my sorrow, and probably right before thinking of space before I get sleepy, I'll cry an ocean. If I'm busy, I'll be whistling and singing away listening to my iPod, and I'll have a "talk to the iPod" attitude. If I'm serious, I'm probably inspired by what's before me, so thereby I'm completely immersed in it. But if I am presented with an extremely attractive male of the opposite gender...I am, simply put, unpredictable.

Aanywho, apart from THAT craziness, awl is well. :) It's Diwali, and that officially means "HAPPY NEW YEAR" to Northern and Western Indians. *woot woot* My new years resolution: *uh* *GET TO MED SCHOOL* and...maybe stop swooning hopelessly. *heh..can't stop giggling* MAKE IT STOOOOPP!!!!

On a totally random note: My work, is SO AMAZING! I'm learning a lot, and although I'm challenged many times by the data that I end up with, putting it all together is priceless. I love my team. They're an inspirational, amazingly funny, and focused lot!

apples be good for 'da soul o'da mind

*while buying apples at Meijer's*

Dad: "Guess what? You won't BELIEVE what I did today!"
Me: "What did you do that was so UNBELIEVABLE?!" *gasps*
Dad: "I ate an apple!!!"
Me: *uh*
Dad: "And I thought. Like those thinkers. I ate an apple and I thought."
Me: *uhh*
Dad: "You know, that Isaac Newton fellow ate an apple and thought, and he discovered gravity!"
Me: "OH! WOW! Maybe you'll discover antigravity?! Just like matter has anti-matter! You could come up with anti-gravity!!!!!" *excited looks*

That's still on hold..meaning I'm still waiting for dad to prove anti-gravity. BTW..that's his patent. Don't any of youse evil readers steal our idea! It was HE who ate the apple after all! :D

But wouldn't it be cool if there was such a thing as anti-gravity? That'd be like...STUPENDOUS! ENRAPTURING! EXPANDIFEROUSLY MARVELOUS! And..kewl. :)

So peoples: EAT AN APPLE EVERY DAY!

:O *excited horrification*

ok, so I sent a bunch of you this message:

HOLY ****, I WANT TO DO THIS:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7049002.stm

meaning..I want to build and launch my own sputnik! but the only thing i have is motivation, and maybe SOME knowledge (maaybe)...do you peeps know any friends of intellectual caliber and drive to help me build this thang?! like, i'm pretty serious about this! i love space, it's an insatiable passion! i'd definitely be willing to get down on this on weekends and after work! :)

also, any additional ideas would also help a ton. if any of you have materials that could help and know i'll see you soon, then please let me know!

*super excited*

*HAhA* I read Slashdot's comments on building your own Sputnik..and I realize it's harder than what BBC claims it to be! *DAMN IT ALL TO HELL* Maybe like GRAAADUALLY, over hundreds of years I can build this thing on my own, orrr..maybe I'd rather build MY OWN spacecraft to fly around in! That'd be worth more eh? And useful for ...spatial exploration!

ummm...AWLSO! I had SUCH a blast this past weekend! OH 'EM GEE!!!! Esp. last night, I went to this Haunted House (44 acre sort of 'haunted theme park') at *um* *struggles to remember location* NILES!!! right...at Niles, MI! You peoples should DEFINITELY check it out...it scared the BUH-JEEEZESUS out of me! I was screaming, falling over, and dying with laughter ALL AT THE SAME TIME! For me..that's QUITE the site to see! *haha* Ask Lin and Dustin..they had 'visual proof.' :D They had like a magic show, which was really sorta creepy b/c I was a participant. *shifty eyes* And a maze, in which we got lost for literally 45-50 minutes before Lin *genius* figured the way out (and it was like 2 inches away from the FIRST time we attempted that side of the maze). *so obvious* But after the maze was this claustrophobia house with pressurized balloons on both sides..i mean it was like SUFFOCATING..and you had to go through it to continue. We liked it so much we went back and forth a couple times..just to understand how the whole non-oxygen thing works. ;) *giggles*

And on the way there there were like 50 BAJILLION MONSTERS...and you know how they pick on the ones that are most scared? WELLLLL...that was ME! *woops* So I LITERALLY RAN THROUGH that whole section, I pushed Dustin and Lin aside all like "RUUUN!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!! SAAAAVE YOSELFFF!!!!!!!!!"

*cough* I'm worth seeing scared poopless. :) And they won't even like STOP once they see how horrified you are..they'll STALK you! In the beginning, I got scared like 10 times by this guy dressed as a monster w/ an ax, and the 11th time I just turned around and was like, "You know what buddy? Could you mind your own biness or am I going to have to eat your brains? I'm trying to get scared here, and you're just ruining the mood!" *HAHAHA* I was proud of myself. I stood up against costume-induced fear! *woot* But I still mutilated both Dustin and Lin's hands to hell and beyond. *yikes*

OH MAN...THE GOOOOD TAIMES! :D So now, I'm going to have to try out the "scariest" place in michigan, just to see if I could survive it you know? I think I would..ummm..if Lin and Dustin were there..for sure! :)

is nothing something?

*ahem*

Answer: ???

I was conversing with my friend Emil today, and just some thoughts overtook our tawks, and we ended up debating whether or not the little thing that is us, our body, or life, meant anything in the context of the Universe. It's really quite a debatable topic.

Imagine...the Universe would you? *imagines* *dies if in Hitchiker's Guide* ;) (for those of you who are clueless, in the HG, a human sees the Universe through this machine right before they die, and they die simply because they're astonished at its beauty and grandeur that it's too much to comprehend for the human mind, thus *kaput*)

Where was I? *revamps* Right...

Imagine the Universe. It's pretty huge eh? Maybe this aid will help you: think of you, right now, reading this. You're sitting in a comfortable or not so comfortable chair or sofa, or are plushed out on cushiony beds royally reading my words *giggles* (i wish)..You're under some form of shelter, underneath a roof. Zoom out. You see the roof, the trees and buildings surrounding yours. The little pie hole on earth that you occupy, imagine the beautiful blue and white marble that is the Earth. Keep going, just see black, and this blue dot. That's all there is now, and maybe a small white dit next to it looking slightly retarded and out of place. Next you see a few more dots, some bigger, some barely visible, but not far away is quite a huge monster of fire, our Sun. Keep going. Pretty soon you will begin to realize the irrelevancy of spatial orientation, because you begin to see other spiral disks, other brightly colored clouds, dots, sparkles, glittering in a veil of black reaching out like arms. Suddenly, you realize you were at the edge of the Milky Way, peering outward, you turn back, and see the center. It's veiled by an uncountable, unfathomable number of glitters. Far away you can see a bright spot, and as you zoom out more, it gets closer to the Milky Way. It is the Andromeda galaxy. Fast forward, there's too many disks to count. The Earth disappeared a long time ago. Dunno where it is...it's not even a pixel of what you see now. You can take it as far as you want from there...I like to revel in my imagination of it on my own. ;)

Nevertheless, in some way, you begin to understand where you are in this massive conglomerate of seeming "randomness." That's really it..it seems so random doesn't it? But from our human perspective, we can discern distinct shapes, colors, feels. And if we can see it carefully, there is order...beautiful random order! In ALL of it, in the midst of EVERYTHING THAT EXISTS...is US! From this drawn out perspective, our existance matters little. Our lives, loves, hates, destruction of our planet, our self-conciousness as omnipotent thoughtful human beings falls apart. Nothing we can think of as "ours" matters anymore! It disintegrates. We become nothing. We matter nothing. We are just a part of this randomness. Somewhere in there, not mattering to the Universe, is you.

*aaha* Stop right there. Somewhere in there is YOU! You exist! OH MY GOSH! Look around you! All those glitters, all those darknesses...everything exists!!! Everything un-exists! EVERYTHING IS!!!! It just IS! It's too profound to put into words! Suddenly, you realize that what you are made of, is in so many ways connected to everything else that exists. That even our small solar system is composed of our Universe, that even our small hearts and minds are components of its energy! Some call it God, others just respect it as what holds everything together or makes everything fall apart.

But in the midst of it all, you realize that your nothing, is in so many ways, EVERYTHING. You may feel down occasionally, and doubt everything in your life. And it's only true, what we do matters little in the context of it ALL. But it's here, it exists, your actions, thoughts, your progress exists. So damn it! If you don't want to make the most of it, atleast marvel at the world around you! Marvel at the beauty that is you, that is your Universe.

So, are you nothing? or everything? I ask you. :)

oh..extra tidbit:

Dedication to Blog Action Day

This story is about a tree..a lone tree that has survived more than 200 years of bombardment by Lake Superior's furious storms and winters. And now, here it grows, alone, at the edge of a lush forest overlooking the vast expanse of water that threatens its very survival. A piece of rock supported its roots to the remainder of the land (the larger rock) but 50 years ago, the last remnants of the support were washed away by Lake Superior, and thus stands this lone tree..roots barren, holding on to the one source of soil it can reach to remain alive.

It's called survival of the fittest. As Steven King aptly put it in Jurassic Park "Life finds a way."

Sometimes, I wonder if I am that tree. Just barely hanging on, making my stand against all odds. But then I think of something greater..I think of our world. We are all just as this tree, threatened towards extinction possibly by our very actions to survive. What we had not realized, is in making our stand to survive, we purposefully washed away our support, and now we MUST build it back. We MUST survive what we have done to our planet, because if we do not, there will be no hope. We will drown...(pun intended). We are already drowning.

Please, do something good EACH DAY for your environment! Such matters should not require special days, special times, or special seconds of action..we are constantly deteriorating our world, so PLEASE, learn to constantly build a little of its beauty back! If not for anyone else, do it for YOU..for the survival of your own freakin' GENOME!

our Universe is flippin' oot! :O

"Why our time dimension is about to become space-like
October 9th, 2007 | by KFC |

It don’t get much weirder than this. The universe is about to lose its dimension of time says a group of theoretical astrobods at the University of Salamanca in Spain. And they got the evidence to prove it.

The idea comes from the study of braneworlds: the thinking that the universe we see around us is a 4-dimensional cosmos called a braneworld embedded in a multidimensional universe. The “signature” of our universe is the number of space and time-like dimensions it has: in our case we got 3 space-like dimensions and one time-like dimension. It’s what astrobods call a Lorentzian universe. So far so good: lots of astronutters think the same thing.

But our universe may not always have been like this. Some theorists think it may once have had a Euclidean signature meaning that all the dimensions were space-like. Now Marc “Bars” Mars and a few pals in Spain say that the Universe’s signature might be about to flip from Lorentzian to Euclidean. In other words, our dimension of time is about turn space-like. Gulp!

This ain’t entirely bonkers and here’s why. Bars Mars has calculated what it’s like to be an observer in a universe that is about to flip and get this: it would look as if it were expanding and accelerating away from us. Sound familiar?

Yep, it’s exactly what astrobods have been observin over the last few years, a phenomenon they attribute to dark energy. If Bars Mars is right, dark energy ain’t got nothing to do with it and we’re all starin’ down the barrel of a cosmic catastrophe.

Still, maybe four space-like dimensions will be better than three. Who needs time anyway?

Ref: arxiv.org/abs/0710.0820: Is the Accelerated Expansion Evidence of a Forthcoming change of Signature?"

SOURCE: http://arxivblog.com/?p=71

WOW! Is that not crazy..yet AMAZING?! It's exhilerating actually, and maybe a bit horrifying at the same time. I just wonder how long it will take to fully flip..dang it! I WANNA EXPERIENCE A TIMELESS UNIVERSE! NOW! *haha*

Also, my Universe did quite the 180 over the past 4 days...I shall save juicy details for later. :)

mud O_O

Yestuhday, while running, I found myself cold and shivery, and looking around I realized that I'd been running in a continuous veil of drizzle, and I didn't even know it! So since I was already drenched from the 50 trillion tiny seemingly invisible drops of water, I decided to go beserk in my backyard!

And OH MY GOSH! I danced in the grass like a HOOLIGAN for HOURS in POURING RAIN!!!! I just danced and danced! I probably sent my iPod to hell and beyond, but damn it..the music, the water, and the soft grass made it so PERFECT! My dad came out with some gorgeously hot indian delicacy, but upon watching me for a few minutes secretly (i hate it when people do that) started laughing his butt off! And it wasn't because I was dancing like crap..anything BUT...it was because I was COVERED in mud, and grass!!!! I had it in my hair, all over my face, my shorts were RUINED! (they're orange, and you could only see the orange in like..some spots, everything else was green grass or black mud, thankfully i was barefooted in the grass or my sneakers would have committed suicide from mud-shame)

I could only have said, it was the MOST happy I have felt in a VERY long time. It was so perfect, nobody but me, a part of nature, dancing with nature. (until dad showed up *cough*)

I remember, in India during the monsoon season, my best friend on THAT subcontinent (Gudia), and I used to dance and run amok on our terrace until there was literally 2 feet of water at our feet...and then it was just fun splashing around like crazy foo's. And there..the rain isn't even cold..it's like HOT compared to here. *haha*

Anywho, I'm in the real world now. I never thought this little girl would get to the "BIG BAD WORLD," but BOY, I'm 'der. And it's not AS big, or AS bad as I expected..(it's probably more so and I just don't know it yet..but save the juicy details for later peeps!) But this wonderful moment sponsored by rainy downpours, was enlightening in that the "big bad world" is JUST as BIG and BAD as I want it to be. Because it's me looking out through these eyes, it's me feeling, and typing, and hearing, and speaking (uncontrollably), and singing, and dancing, and loving, and hating, and believing! And that's my world!!!

It's BEAUTIFUL! All the mud is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! :D

cheers

hey hey PUNKS!

So a LOT of stuff has happened lately that has just purely warranted me moping about wondering what my purpose in life really is. My grandma passed away recently, and she was honestly, the ONE person that loved me UNCONDITIONALLY. Like..nobody on planet earth could have loved me more. It still hasn't hit me yet..I just mostly remember her voice and her running after me when i was a baby trying to get me to eat food (which at the time was the BANE of my existance, but is quite the opposite now *haha*). Whenever people leave me, I just feel like it's evil to not let them go, and to make them hold on just for our sick pleasure of their wonderful company. I feel like when you let them go, they are truly at peace, and they are truly free. And I've realized most importantly, that they live on forever in my memory, so for however "forever" I am alive, so are those who leave us.

And I'm sort of jealous, because "death is the road to awe."

I want to be awed sometimes. Don't get me wrong..but if you've read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you'll understand when I say I want to see the Universe in its full glory when I die. That's kind of all I live for! After all, I am a part of this Universe, so whatever little part of me I understand, so will I to that of the Universe at large. All these "sad" events have brought so much more meaning to my life. That yes, death is scary when it happens. Simply because you're not human anymore. No matter what you believe in, reincarnation, salvation, resurrection in different forms, total oblivious-ness, transportation to heaven or hell, whatever..ultimately, death brings about the ending of human existence. And believe you me, that's one HELL of a scary thought. To not EXIST, ironically, is a scary thought. I say ironically because I constantly worry about why things even exist, but I only realize the importance of their existence once they are no more. To exist is to be, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually a manifestation of this Universe. Although I really believe death is equally so, it's hard to comprehend losing the physical aspect of that manifestation. It's hard to imagine not ACTUALLY BEING anymore, not actually breathing, eating, sleeping, and feeling our emotions as a part of a living entity. Maybe it's hard to also accept that once that physical part is gone, that there will be nobody who will be able to "see" the other parts of being. It's so scary to accept being free of the human body.

So here's to my life. Here's to my existence. *raises imaginary drink* Here's to understanding my Universe. And here's to my wonderful, loving grandma, who will live with me forever. Forever.

I JUST read this too: "I am nothing more than a single narrow gasping lung, floating over the mists and summits." -Peter Habeler, 1978

*bzzzzz* *SPLOTCH!!!*

*SQUIRSH SQUIRSH SQUIRSH* *EEEEEECCCCCHHHHHHHHH*

That's what it sounded like..and lOOked like! *aa* I was driving down Howard, lost in Shruti thoughts, and this HUGE green bug just went to heaven right on my windshield. Like I literally saw it flying in happily, and the next moment all it's happy thoughts were splayed out as guts and poop that it ..pooped out b/c it was nervous it was going to die or something! *haha* I know..ew. But it's remains are displayed on my car, for all other insect dudes to pay homage and never come in front of a Shruti-driving-car-in-deep-thought moment. And then after that I didn't even look at the road b/c I was staring at its gooey yellow-green lifelessness a mile long in every direction SHOCKED that I'd just taken an innocent life.

OH! The consequences of being human! *flails* I sort of secretly feel like that bug is me though sometimes..I'm the happy widdle bug, and the MCAT just comes and HITS me..and I go *SPLOTCH*. And then the MCAT goes..*EEEECCCCHHHH* *haha*

Anywho, I apologize to the spirit of this bug that I so viciously mutilated. It was a very dramatic moment in my life actually..like I ACTUALLY SAW it ALIVE one nanosecond, and then within the next picosecond it was torn apart like a dying star! I even might have caught it's head flying off all confused at where the rest of the body had ended up (in a million pieces on the windshield wondering where the head was off to).

Ok I'll shut up about this dying moment now. *heh* It was just about the most exciting moment I've come to experience of late.

10 rules for being human

Rule One:
You will receive a body. You may love it or hate it, but it will be yours for the duration of your life on Earth.

Rule Two:
You will be presented with lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called 'life.' Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum.

Rule Three:
There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of experimentation, a series of trials, errors, and occasional victories. The failed experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that work.

Rule Four:
A lesson is repeated until learned. Lessons will be repeated to you in various forms until you have learned them. When you have learned them, you can then go on to the next lesson.

Rule Five:
Learning does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

Rule Six:
'There' is no better than 'here'. When your 'there' has become a 'here,' you will simply obtain a 'there' that will look better to you than your present 'here'.

Rule Seven:
Others are only mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself.

Rule Eight:
What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you.

Rule Nine:
Your answers lie inside of you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.

Rule Ten:
You will forget all of this at birth. You can remember it if you want by unravelling the double helix of inner knowing.

-Cherie Carter-Scott, from "If Life is a Game, These are the Rules"

keep things whole

In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.

When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body's been.

We all have reasons
for moving
I move
to keep things whole.

light please!

Upon discovering that my o so beauteous macbook HAS NO KEYBOARD BACKLIGHT!!!!!....I went on a 'my life is darkness' rampage w/ Emil:

Me: it's ALL BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF KEYBOARD BACKLIGHTS!
-WHY O WHY!!!!!
-*flails* & *dies*
-i should do what derk suggests...start selling crack...that's AFTER i stop eating/smoking/whatever people do with it that i'm supposedly doing with it
-now EVERYTHING ties in
-now there's a reason for it ALL...there is no light in my life

Emil: you know what
-there's always a tomorrow

Me: i know, maybe if i keep myself and my laptop outside when the sun rises it can you know..capture some of that solar energy and thereby give my life some meaning...WAITTT..that'd require solar panels, which would require BILLIONS of dollars, which NOBODY has b/c it's all spent and gone in the Iraq war...so basically, i'm lightless...AGAIN
*sobs even more passionately*

O..THE GOOD TIMES! :D *haha*

Life's been great! Seriously, tons of light has been shone here (thankfully)! I'm doing things I love, one of which involves intense MCAT studying, ER-ing, and just chillin' w/ my fellow villians. :)

motivated

(listening al) *we're going to win this* - Bloc Party

I LOVE that band! *swoons*

*ahem* I'm finally motivated, to do things in life. All kinds of things. I went to my poster presentation in Indianapolis, and I met the Director of the Drug Screening division at Promega! *gasps* That was so cool!!! :) He LOVED that just about EVERY inhibitor I used was from his company! *haha* Ofcourse, there were some very interesting questions that were raised about my project and data, and what can be done further. I made some great friends too...all in just an hour and a half! :D (that's me for ya')

All in all, I came to realize how stupid I've been. I used to be self-motivated, and something came along and distracted me. All of a sudden, I see it again. It's like an open road. Before, I saw an ocean, a never-ending mass of water before me. Now I see the white bridge I was standing on extend over the ocean. I don't know where it goes, but it's continuing dang it! It's my rainbow. You may say it's stupid to follow a rainbow, but that's like saying it's stupid to follow your dreams.

*whispers* Follow your dreams!

*giggles*

*looks out window* DUDES! Our road's finally being resurfaced, and OMG..it looks like a freakin' ARMY OF TRANSFORMERS outside our house right now! You know...when there's about 5,669,782,319,400,371 HUMONGOUS heavy duty trucks sucking up asphalt and spitting it out like wrathful ooze when there's barely enough space on our street to hold two mid-sized sedans? The first time I saw them, it reminded me of War of the Worlds. *eek*

RUN PEOPLE!!! RUUUN FOORR YOUURR LIIIVEEESSSSSSS!!!!!

*ends rant*

I bought a laptop! It's bootiful! :D *swoons* EDIT: My desktop! :D :D :D ..the bkgd. is from the Transformers movie..perfectly in sync w/ the happenings on my street.

Um, nothing else is new. I'm going to Indianapolis this Sundee for an international conference at Eli Lilly, and I get to present my data from lab on a poster! :) I'm super excited!!! It looks really pretty too! *thanks macbook*

*official british accent voice* I'd also like to take this wonderful opportunity to give a shout out to Jean, Sandhya, and Steve. Thank you SO MUCH for EVERYTHING! I love you guys!!!!!

And ofcourse, to my parents for their insurmountable patience with me this entire time. Gosh knows how many dishes I didn't do these past few months. :D

Hark!

O holy crayola! Yesterday, I parked my car in front of Kanley Chapel, grabbed my checks, and started towards National City Bank at the Bernhard Center. In front of me walked two dudes in suits, shirt, pants, tie, and allll that jazz. And they turned around and asked me if they could speak with me about religion. At first I was flattered, and I started ranting about how I was raised a Hindu, but went to Catholic school, and am currently a scientist (at heart)...and they were from the Church of Latter Day Saints, Mormons I think they said.

So, they asked me a bunch of questions, one of which was would you like to "pray and meet with us and hear the voice of God?"..aka.."wanna join our club?"

Me: *stares cheekily* So, what do you think God looks like? Is he a human, and an old one with a big hairy white beard that's 40 bajillion miles long? (I didn't say 40 bajillion, sorry)
Them: *huh* That's a good question. But we think that it is something spiritual manifested as a human.
Me: So what about bacteria, and viruses...do they have a God? And if an elephant saw God, would it be human?
Them: Do you think animals have the capacity to think of God?
Me: Do we know? WE DON'T KNOW DO WE?! How can you say you're right by discounting about 90% of life on earth?! I am a scientist and even I can't discount that we even remotely understand other species on earth and their cognitive abilities! If an elephant did believe in God, do you think it'd be like 'O Human God, I boww dooownn before thee!' HOW DO YOU KNOW?!
Them: *silence*
Me: I believe anything and everything is God, including myself. I believe in cosmic energy.
Them: *wow* *gasps* That's a great way to put it!
Me: *FOR SERIOUSLY?!* Where do you think God is?
Them: He's all around, but there's parts that are (i think they meant) "concentrated"
Me: Then how can he be all around?
Them: But if you pray with us God will show you the truth from what is wrong.
Me: Isn't what's wrong also wrongfully true? Meaning, isn't "wrong" also true that it's wrong..so essentially, there is no "right" or "wrong" or "good" and "evil"..just choice of which truth is followed?
Them: *confused looks*
Me: And what about evolution and creation?
Them: We believe that they're both possible..that God gave humans the option of selecting either. So Adam and Eve were made in God's image, and that's what we believe.
Me: *what the frick?!* How can TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS happen at the SAME TIME?!!!
Them: *chuckle & stare @ themselves*

Me: *Yea, you need to think about your shit before you try to convince someone else*

For you: I deeply respect all religions and faiths, and I respect what these two young men had to say to me. It was a great debate! But one should have complete understanding about all the faiths of this world to preach it...one should respect freedom of choice, and respect other cultures and beliefs. I'm not saying I know everything...I KNOW NOTHING. But I know that nobody will ever fully understand how our world functions, how humans function, without seeking to understand other beliefs. It solidifies certain common grounds within ALL religions..one of which is essentially Morality, wherein lie concepts of do unto others as you would to yourself, etc. Without true understanding and respect for different beliefs, one can never TRULY believe in God.

*eee*

:)

I is happy. Friday the 13th ended up being the best day of my entire life. Better than President's Scholar Award day. That day, I attended a Spanish Department Award ceremony, which I thought would be relatively short and simple..as in I would get a certificate of my greatness in spanish..that is all. But it was SO much more. My friend Lauren, fellow Chemistry Presidents Scholar was there as well, so I think she's following along in my 'footsteps' if I ever had any. ;) *checks* *yup* I gots some. :D (they're cute too)

Anywho, I really wanted my parents to attend, but since I didn't know what a big deal it was, I didn't really feel too sad at their absence. So I check my name on the program sheet, and I'm like 7th down, for the Maria Moliner Award. I have no clue what it is ofcourse. I saw some of my favorite professors in the WORLD though (Sr. Pastrana-Perez, Sr. Felkel, Sr. Millar, Sra. Montilla), so I spoke to them. (lots of hugs, and a few kisses from Dr. Felkel! *haha*)It was GREAT!!!! And Dr. Pastrana explained to me what the award meant, mainly that Maria Moliner had written the world's BEST illustrated Spanish Dictionary, in a time when the male gender dominated such fields. So this award, in his eyes, was representative of me entering medicine, a field predominated by males. (which I wonder if it's true anymore *contemplates*) But that got my spirits up, and I had a seat, after which the award ceremony began.

There were about nine seniors in the category I was in, each with their own award. eg. my friend Mary got the Premio Antonio de Nebrija. *yay Mary!!* :D ..for her 'intellectual wit' (she's a friggin' mathematical genius). But what surprised me the most was that before handing out the award, they described the award, and the origins of the award's name, but then they went into PRAISING..literally, PRAISING EACH AND EVERY STUDENT!!! Every award was preceded by at least three quotes about the student from different professors. So obviously, when it came to me, I was already trembling. Dr. Pastrana, Dr. Millar, Dr. Felkel, and Dr. Montilla had SO MANY things to say, they couldn't STOP!!! OMG. I was barely able to stand when I went up to get the award, and my eyes started watering and my throat hurt. O dear. It was the best, most honorable experience of my LIFE. :)

*whew* So, I'm happy. It's moments like these when I feel appreciated when I least exptected it. I love such moments. Most of all, I love that the people I most respect bestowed upon me such an unexpected honor. It's not the award that counts (which by the way was the LaRousse Illustrated, that Maria Moliner wrote) it was all the hugs, and kisses, and the exchange of nervous spanish jutting out of my being. *haha* It was priceless.

And then..THEN..my family and I planned to have dinner at Olive Garden that night, and my mom wore a Sari!!!! She looked PHENO-MEN-AL!!! HOLY CRAYOLA! My dad and I wouldn't stop swooning over her! *haha* It was an AWESOME dinner, full of love, and family. Just family.

So those of ye who believe Friday the 13th is bad..I kid you not, there's no such thing. Every day could be spent joyously. It's how you decide to appreciate it that counts. So make the most of it eh?!

swoonage of eh-panyol

*kills self for not 'tilding' the n*

So my spanish class RULES! Here's the shortest latin american story EVER written:

"El dinosaurio -by Augusto Monterroso
Cuando desperto, el dinosaurio todavia estaba alli."
translation: "When I woke up, the dinosaur was still there."

O_O *stares*...for some reason, I LOVE how a sentence that small could mean SO much!

*haha* *compliments self-nerdiness*
Here's some good advise for us women though:
"Cuando un hombre que esta vivo te hace llorar, hay que dejarlo. Solo se llora por los amantes muertos." -Clara Obligado
translation: "When a man who is alive makes you cry, you have to leave him. Cry only over dead lovers."

..that's some wicke' awesome advise. :D
*enough feminism* ;)

you're ugly *evil grin* $:>

Dr. E: "If you want to call someone ugly, you can say 'Your cell adhesion molecules SUCK!!!'"

*ahahaahah*

Dear me, life is busy, but good. Last night we had like a frikkin' blizzard, when the day-before it was 70 degrees outside and I wore slippers. SLIPPERS!!! I wore a skirt, and now..I'm huddled up in 127,239,235,328 layers of clothing!!!! Why o why does the weather have to make us used to high temperatures, then TAKE IT ALL AWAY?! *raises arms to heavens*

:D

O, and the reason I've been so incredulously busy, is that I have a poster presentation for the KCMS Research Day on Wednesday next week, and want to complete writing my rough draft for the honors thesis by tomorrow (which 99.5% may not happen *hehe*, but to be optimistic 0.5% MAY happen), and then I have to finish like 50 million pchem lab reports. *stares @ last four words*

:D I'm still happy that I'm alive. And I love those of you who I haven't seen since Pluto was demoted..you should know, you are missed. *MUA*

aafta' fifty gazillion years! :o

*wicke'* I'm done basking in sorrow! :D ..well, the baskage might return occasionally, but I'm definitely recovering from the wake up call.

Pramod is officially an MS now! OMG...that's frikkin' HUGE! He's my buddy at the lab who worked for so long in engineering, and so knew absolutely NOTHING of biochemistry. He got pretty tore up in his first few committee reviews and presentations..but he's finally perfected himself as a scientist in biochemistry. That is an incredible feat. Dr. S2 and the committee members were praising his Thesis, and presentation. I helped. *beams selfishly with pride* ;)

*sighs with major swoonage*

Also, for those of you who don't already know, (I suppose I should announce this SOMETIME before it becomes one of those "o, it was something I got in high school but isn't relevant in my life anymore really..") I am the Presidential Scholar for the Department of Biological Sciences at WMU!!!!!!! How sa-weet is that huh?! *punk sign* AND...AND...The Spanish department is awarding me with something as well as an exceptional senior in their departement!!! :D :D :D

*I rule*

...haha. I'm excited. I mean there's a limit to being sad. You can't do it all the time, because then you ruin yourself, and wonderful viruses linger around you basking in joy upon reaching your lymph nodes..or is that sorrow for them when they're presented to B and T cells? *ponders* Yea, I got so sad, some happy virus inhabited my being for about two weeks..I'm on antibacterials right now to avoid opportunistic damn pathogens! *holds up antibacterial sword* *grr*

My point is..let us all be happy, and realize that our true potential is not the money we have, not the things we own, not the clothes we wear and not even who we choose to look up to. Our true potential is within ourselves, and this is most realized in the present moment..NOW. Soooo...what're you doing RIGHT NOW SLAACKER?!!!

Get to it! :)

what dreams may come...

"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible."
T. E. Lawrence, "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom"

Pioneers

PIONEERS. -Bloc Party
If it can be broke then it can be fixed, if it can be fused then it can be split
It's all under control
If it can be lost then it can be won, if it can be touched then it can be turned
All you need is time

We promised the world we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?

A sense of purpose and a sense of skill, a sense of function but a disregard
We will not be the first, we won't
You said you were going to conquer new frontiers,
Go stick your bloody head in the jaws of the beast
We promised the world, we'd tame it, what were we hoping for?

Breath in, breath out

So here we are reinventing the wheel
I'm shaking hands with a hurricane
It's a colour that I can't describe,
It's a language I can't understand
Ambition, tearing out the heart of you
Carving lines into you
Dripping down the sides of you

We will not be the last.

i's stupi'

So THIS is why I got rejected! *smacks forehead*

*okie dokes*

Um, this is just an update. :) *update*

A WHOLE BUNCH OF SHIT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW! *dies*

...the end.

Nevermind, actually, when I get all sad and my view of life from the earth starts plummetting horrendously into the sun, which subsequently explodes and sends the entire galaxy hurtling into the Andromeda, which creates a massive supernova capable of demolishing the Universe, ..um, where was I? *recollects*

*right*..When I get all sad and ..all of the above begins to happen...I try to drop off of planet earth. I huddle into my ickle shell and swoon at happy times, at times when life had meaning, and at times when global warming could be considered a belief and not a fact. I think of times when I arrogantly strutted around like a smart chick, and obnoxiously dismissed anyone who tried to convince me to do better on my MCATs. And now, I bask in sunless doom. I bask in sorrow, and need to contemplate about where I have to take my life. It's on a massive pause. Kind of like, when a cheetah realizes that in running so fast, he/she dropped its lucious meat. That's what I did. My meat is gone. *poof* *shabam*

All that's left is me.
